Works on the National Park Athletics Track are progressing rapidly and according to the Commissioner of the Protected Areas Commission, Damian Fernandes, it should be completed by this month end.
Fernandes told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the Track is in its third phase which is capping the area with sand and earth as well as leveling and rolling. He stated that he is pleased with the progress of the work despite encountering some difficulties in finding the quality of earth to lay on the Track.
When quizzed on the drainage of the facility, the Commissioner informed that the land is a lot higher and will dry faster. “This field was the lowest area of the park so we had to do a lot of back filling and we are still working on the drainage system”, he added.
Fernandes said that upon completion of the third stage they will implant grass on the field which is the final phase and together with the clubs, will monitor the track to decide when the athletes can commence training.
