At a simple but significant ceremony held recently at the famous Albion Sports Complex, Mr. Bobby Deonarine of Tenelec based in Washington USA renewed sponsorship of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Inter Club Under-15 competition, investing over $500,000.
One of the speakers at the ceremony, Mr Vemen Walter, Human Resource Manager of GUYSUCO Albion Estate was high in praise of the sponsors for their faith and role played in the development of the game, while also praising the work of the BCB.
Walter noted that the tournament is used as the nursery for Berbice cricket where talented players are identified and nurtured. He added that two of the Guyanese players who were in Dubai with the West Indies Under-19 Team, Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai and Shimron Hetmyer are recent products of Tenelec’s sponsorship.
Tenelec’s James Samuel (3rd left) presents the cheque to BCB President Keith Foster in the presence of other officials.
He added that other successful cricketers that went on to represent West Indies including Narsingh Deonarine, Verasammy Permaul, Devindra Bishoo, Assad Fudadin and Royston Crandon, all participated in this tournament.
BCB President, Mr. Keith Foster thanked Mr. Deonarine on behalf of the Board. He noted that not many will invest in Guyana when they live and earn overseas but Deonarine is an exception. Mr. Foster informed that Deonarine, who is the uncle of West Indies middle order batsman Narsingh Deonarine is a true patriot of his country of birth and is always willing to assist young people.
BCB First VP Anil Beharry was also high in praise for the sponsors and thanked them for this investment in the youths in Berbice. He said that many young people are led astray towards the ills in Society and this tournament is an avenue to help them make meaningful contributions to the development of themselves and their communities.
He added that international quality floodlights will soon be installed at the Albion Sports Complex and it is expected that many sporting activities will be held to keep young people constructively occupied. He pleaded to parents to make sure that their young children take full advantage of this tournament.
Mr. Deonarine, in a short but inspiring speech said it was money well spent and he will always support cricket in Berbice, with the younger players taking priority. He said that he is happy to be part of the success of so many players that come out of Berbice and go on to represent Guyana and eventually West Indies.
Tenelec Inc. is also the sponsor of the premiere 50-overs first division cricket competition in Berbice. That tournament is set to play in the second half of the year and the BCB is optimistic that Tenelec Inc. will be on board once more.
