A retired member of the Georgetown City Constabulary accused of slashing his ex-girlfriend’s throat and stabbing her outside a church last October is set to face a Judge and Jury in the High Court for attempted murder.
The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) ended earlier this week, as Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry told the accused that the Prosecution had successfully established a prima facie case of attempted murder against him.
Godfrey Lammy, 62, of 5 Laing Avenue, Georgetown was last year brought before the Chief Magistrate for attempting to murder 45-year old Denise Hope on Wellington Street, Georgetown on Saturday, October 26, 2013.
Hope is a vendor on Regent and Wellington Streets while the accused is a taxi driver.
Previous reports indicate that the victim was conducting her daily business when she was approached from behind, held by the neck and stabbed with a knife, also in the back.
The assailant had fled the scene. Lammy was later arrested at Sister’s Village, West Bank Demerara, approximately five hours after he allegedly attacked his ex-lover.
He was then brought to the courts and charged with the indictable offence.
The PI got underway earlier last month and the Prosecution which was led by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru, attached to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, brought five (5) witnesses to testify on behalf of the state.
In response to the Prosecutor’s submissions, the Chief Magistrate indicated that based on the hold of the evidence she is of the opinion that a sufficient case of attempted murder is made out against Lammy to stand trial for the attempted murder of Denise Hope at the next practical sitting at the High Court.
