The four-hour journey from Parika to Bartica has now increased significantly, in terms of time, to the dismay of passengers, especially those dependent on the service to transport cargo.
The regular flow of service was reportedly interrupted since Monday without the travelling public being notified.
According to a businessman, who depends on the ferry service, the MV Makouria, which usually plies the route, is at the dock, and the MV Malali is the replacement. The MV Malali plies the Wakenaam route.
With only one engine, the MV Malali departed the Parika stelling to go to Bartica at around 10:30hrs yesterday. It would usually take four hours to travel to Bartica, but because only one engine was powering the vessel, at around 16:00hrs it was still on its journey.
The businessman said that owing to the slothfulness of the vessel, “an entire productive day is lost”. He said that many trucks on the vessels are loaded with perishables and other essential cargo.
Attempts to reach the General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department were unsuccessful.
