… battling for life at GPHC
A 21-year-old construction worker is battling for his life in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being shot by a lone gunman around 05:15 hrs yesterday.
The injured man has been identified as Inshan Ali Ramlakhan of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara Public Road.
He was shot once to the upper left shoulder by a gunman on bicycle in the vicinity of Conversation Tree.
The injured man’s mother, Bibi Ali Ramlakhan, said yesterday that she was informed by doctors at the medical institution that the bullet which struck her son on his shoulder also damaged his spine and lung.
He is said to be on a life support machine at the hospital.
Police in a press release said that Ramlakhan was walking along the Railway Embankment, Blygezight, when he was attacked by a man armed with a handgun.
The release further added that the victim was held up and shot to his left shoulder by the perpetrator who took away three cell phones and $8,000 before escaping on a bicycle.
During an interview with the injured man’s mother, she explained that her son, who does construction work with one of his uncles, was supposed to go on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway yesterday.
“He does normally stop off at Conversation Tree every morning to reach up his uncle and then the two of them does go to work together, but yesterday he left early because he had to go far,” Bibi Ali Ramlakhan said.
The woman said that she was informed that a few minutes after her son exited the minibus he was confronted by a lone gunman who demanded that he drop his haversack.
“I heard when he dropped his bag with his working clothes and lunch, the man shoot he and pick up the bag and ride away,” the mother lamented.
The injured man was rushed to the hospital by his uncle, who had found him lying in a pool of blood on the roadway. He was immediately taken for surgery and was placed in the ICU a little after 14:00hrs.
Police say investigations into the robbery/shooting are ongoing.
