A Foulis, East Coast Demerara truck driver who was being sought in connection with the death of a 14-year-old boy, turned himself in to police at Cove and John yesterday.
The man, who was accompanied by an attorney, remained in custody up to late last night after giving a statement to investigators. He denied any involvement in the teen’s death.
The boy whose only name was given as Andy, was found with his skull crushed on the parapet at 20th Street, Foulis, on Wednesday morning.
Police are working on the theory that he was crushed by the wheel of a truck, under which he was reportedly sleeping for the past few weeks.
Apart from the extensive damage to his skull, investigators also found what appeared to be tyre marks on the dead teen’s body.
They became interested in the truck driver, since the spot where Andy’s body was found was right where the vehicle is usually parked.
Yesterday, police also combed his truck, GLL 9253, which they have impounded, for any possible clues that could shed light on their investigation.
Initially police were treating the matter as a murder and were of the impression that Andy was killed somewhere else and dumped at the back of the village, since there were no signs of blood or a struggle near the body that would suggest otherwise.
Police had detained one resident but released him after they had received new information about the truck.
However, there are still several questions that are lingering in the minds of residents.
“How come de truck driver nah feel he run over something and check fuh see is wha?” one resident asked. “And how come he nah wake up when de truck start up?” was another question.
Residents also want to know if the driver of the truck did not know that Andy had been sleeping there for the past few weeks.
Kaieteur News understands that the truck driver is claiming that he was not aware that the teen had been sleeping under the truck.
