A Brazilian national working in Mazaruni, Region Seven was air-dashed to the city yesterday afternoon, following what his colleague describes as a “freak accident.”
Ataide Fernandez, a 38-year-old machine operator suffered burns to the face and hand, and is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
According to Fernandez’s colleague, Maria Joseph, the man was “lighting firewood” when he received the injuries.
The woman explained that “he was pushing wood to light, but it not lighting, so he went for a bottle and throw gasoline on it, so it went poof! And it flare up in his face.”
Joseph told Kaieteur News that her colleague received burns on the right side of his face, and on both his hands.
The woman told Kaieteur News that upon realizing the seriousness of Fernandez’s condition, his boss, also a Brazilian national, offered to transport his employee back to his country.
“I am Brazilian, but married and living here for years, so I told he no, bring (him to) Georgetown, good hospital there,” Joseph said.
She added that “when I was working here, and was sick with Malaria and Dengue all at once, my boss didn’t want to spend his money and bring me out here for treatment, but luckily the workers them begged for me, and I was saved, so I very happy that Ataide didn’t get my problem.”
Fernandez was transported to Bartica and subsequently air-dashed to the Ogle International Airport, from where he was taken to the GPHC.
Joseph told this newspaper that from what the doctors told her, Fernandez has suffered “very bad” burns, and would have to remain hospitalized for a few days.
“They told us it was skin burn. He no have skin really, it burn and peel, so they have to keep him here for longer time,” the woman said.
She explained that while she does not know Fernandez very well, the man came to Guyana alone, and does not have any relatives here.
“He no have anybody with him, so he boss staying here and make sure he okay and so. I will stay too, because he no know English, so I help out them li’l.”
The woman said too that efforts are being made to contact Fernandez’s relatives in neighbouring Brazil.
“We hope we find them, so they come and take good care of him, and maybe take him back or something so he get better.”
