The four football teams that are scheduled to clash when the curtains go up on the Vizion Sports and Entertainment Group Caribbean Inter Club Football Competition scheduled for this afternoon at the Georgetown Football Club Ground and continues March 7th and 9th next, are rearing to go while two of the top artistes, Ginga and Dwayne Stephenson have arrived in Guyana and are ready to set the local stage alight with soul touching renditions.
Yesterday morning, the footballers and entertainers convened at the Windjammer Hotel, Alexander Street and gave a sneak preview of what is in store for revelers as well as football fans. Several other principals shared the head table including promoter, Wally Fraser, the aforementioned artistes, executives of several corporate entities sponsoring the show and representatives of the participating football clubs.
Banks DIH is sponsoring under the GT Genuine Lager Beer’ label and Communications Manager, Troy Peters expressed delight at being afforded the opportunity. “My firm continues to be a key player in sports activities and once again we are delighted to play a major role,” he said. Caribbean Airlines have offset the cost of the airline tickets and its representative, Deon Innis, said that their input is based on the confidence placed in the organizers’ ability to put together a qualitative programme.
“We are anticipating 3 days of exciting football!” he said. Manager of the Boystown FC, Andrew Price, and club captain, Wayne Ellis, both expressed delight at being in Guyana and promised an action packed affair when they take to the field. Not to be outdone, Alpha Coach, Wayne Dover and Slingerz Captain, Tichard Joseph promised to turn in classical, memorable and crowd pleasing performances.
Mr. Fraser reiterated the view that the show will provide top class entertainment. He acknowledged the input of his hard working staff even as he expressed gratitude to the many corporate entities that had rendered support. He further revealed that he envisages that the tournament would be transformed into a huge Caribbean affair as the year’s progress.
Renowned footballer and Coach of Slingerz FC, Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, said that the tournament would provide worthwhile exposure for his charges. He also revealed that his club would accommodate three guest players to improve on its performances; two will be drawn from Suriname clubs with the other, a local player.
Pollard’s opposite number from Alpha, Wayne Dover, said that the imminent championships would provide valuable practice for his boys as they prepare for participation in the imminent Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships.
Meanwhile, Ginga gave fans a preview of things to come when he belted out one of his top tunes, ‘Never lost your way” while Stephenson retained the suspense while urging fans to come to the venue to enjoy a fantastic night. The music team of local songsters, First Born, was also in the house and their youngest member belted out one of their most recent tunes while assuring that his group is ready to deliver a night of musical ecstasy.
Further fans will be in for a treat as the activity will witness the merging of sports and music to create the right atmosphere for their enjoyment. When activities get underway this evening, Boystown FC of Jamaica will go head to head with Slingerz while Buxton FC will take on Alpha United in the supporting match.
Then on Friday, Slingerz FC will match skills with Alpha United moments before Boystown FC tackles Buxton FC with other matches being played up to Sunday March 9.
Then there is local singer, Michelle ‘Big Red’ King and her son, Little Red, who will belt out some of their top tunes while several other entertainers out of Jamaica will also add to the occasion including the popular group, Voice Mail, Christopher Martin and Tappa Zukie.
The price of admission ranges from $1500 for general seating while a VIP seat costs $3000. Tickets are available at Frenzy Bar, Albert and 5th Streets, Albertown, Nigel’s Supermarket, Giftland office Max and White Castle Fish Shop. Tickets can also be had at a location in Buxton ECD. All matches commence at 18:00hrs.
