Students and staff at the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) in Onderneeming, Region 2 planned and executed several activities with the aim of celebrating Guyana’s 44th Republic Anniversary.
The two weeks of planned activities were held under the theme “Cultural Folklore: Celebrating 44” and the administrators of the NOC came up with another theme – “Celebrating our Culture, Our People, Our Pride.”
The highlight of the celebrations was the students’ participation in the Region 2 Mashramani parade where the NOC contingent copped first place. In 2013 and 2012, the institution placed second and third respectively.
Some of the other activities pulled off by the NOC were a series of inter-house sports events including a road race, cricket, boxing, circle tennis, domino and netball. The students also competed in a football match against a team from Supenaam.
The NOC’s steelband also took to the streets where they entertained the residents with their musical skills.
Over the last weekend, revelers from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport also participated in Mash parades in Regions 6 and 10 where hundreds of Guyanese turned out to view the floats, mingle and interact with relatives and friends.
