Forty-three year-old, Joylyn Benn, of Lima Dam, Essequibo Coast, was on Monday freed of a manslaughter charge at the Suddie High Court by Justice Nareshwar Harnarnan, after a jury’s unanimous verdict of not guilty.
Benn was initially charged with manslaughter in 2010 for the killing of her paramour, Dennis Braithwaite, on December 25 of the same year, at Lima, Essequibo Coast.
The mother of three boys wept as she departed the courtroom. Several members of her family were there to support her morally.
It was alleged that Benn was entertaining friends at her residence when an argument ensued between herself and Braithwaite.
It was further alleged that following a physical assault by Braithwaite, Benn subsequently reached for a knife and inflicted a single stab wound to the man’s heart.
Braithwaite was determined to have died from shock and hemorrhage. The post mortem examination was performed by Dr.Vivekanand Bridgemohan.
During the trial, Benn submitted a caution statement which suggested that Braithwaite attempted to hit her with a bench.
The state was represented by Diana Kowlesar, while the defence attorney was Latchmie Dindyal.
