The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has launched a new programme titled ‘Operation Reconnect’ to offer disconnected customers the opportunity to reconnect their service without penalty fees.
According to Customer Services Manager, Jeanette Thomas, “we are receiving alarming reports of customers reconnecting their service illegally which had a significantly negative impact on revenue collection for Georgetown in February 2014”. Thomas explained that the utility has no other option but to remove the entire service of these customers; however GWI water service inspectors will be visiting areas in which the company has previously carried out disconnections, to distribute letters urging customers to reconnect their service.
“It is our last resort to remove the entire service of a disconnected customer since that customer will have to pay the full cost of a new service,” Thomas stated. “Commencing March 4, 2014, disconnected customers are only required to pay their outstanding service charges if payment is made within three (3) working days; we are waiving all reconnection and tampering fees. Hence, customers who have tampered with service connections in order to reconnect their service will not be charged penalty fees; the same waiver will be applied for disconnection fees.
‘It is our priority to reconnect customers rather than remove their service, however, if no payments are made following receipt of ‘service removal’ warning letters, we will be forced to remove all services which were disconnected and illegally reconnected by customers.”
GWI’s ‘Wallet-friendly Payment Plans’ are also a feature of ‘Operation Reconnect’; these will allow disconnected customers with large debts to pay in small, flexible amounts designed to suit their income and budget.
“A wide range of options is available to our customers,” stated Thomas, “we urge all disconnected customers to make payments and avoid the expense of having their services removed and applying for a new GWI connection.”
‘Operation Reconnect’ will initially focus on Georgetown customers; however the programme will be executed via other GWI branches by April 2014.
Disconnected customers with queries can contact GWI’s Customer Services Call Centre on 227-8701/03/04.
