Four local professional boxers are scheduled to leave these shores for Kingston, Jamaica where they will match gloves with their Caribbean counterparts when the Jamaican Boxing Board unveils the 3rd edition of ‘The Contender,’ a tournament that nets the winner thousands of United States dollars.
The local team consists of Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, Gladwin Dorway, Derick Richmond and Revlon Lake; all fighting in the Welterweight division. They will be accompanied by Coaches, Joseph Murray, Orlon ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers and Mark Thom.
While each Coach is responsible for a particular boxer, they will all unite to prepare the team for the rigorous tournament ahead.
The team leaves Guyana Saturday March 16 next and will remain on the Island for approximately four months, during which time, they will engage their counterparts in the host country, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados for a chance to clinch a lucrative purse of US$20,000.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool held a press briefing yesterday afternoon at his Avenue of the Republic Office and explained the details pertaining to participation in the tournament as well as the payment structure in place.
The tournament is dubbed, ‘The Contender,’ similar to the local Guyana Fight Night but with a slight difference. When it started some three years ago, the organizers had pitted the skills of the best Middleweights on the Island in a module that was copied from a similar series staged in North America under the auspices of the World Boxing Council (WBC).
Having ascertained the best Middleweight, the promoters have now broadened the scope to the Welterweight division and were hopeful of participation from other countries in North America and Europe. They have just managed to attract those aforementioned CARICOM countries and this segment will see boxers out of Jamaica (8), Guyana (4), Trinidad and Tobago (2) and Barbados (2) going after the top prize.
It is uncertain at specifically what time Guyanese pugilists will start fighting but Kaieteur Sport was informed that once a fighter loses, he will return home. During their stay in Jamaica, the fighters will receive a weekly stipend to sustain them while all related expenses will be offset by the promoters.
Other than the top prize, the runner up receives US$5000 with the boxer occupying the 3rd place receiving $2,500. The boxer occupying the 4th place spot will receive $1,500.
Meanwhile, Eastman, undoubtedly the most experienced of the lot, is oozing confidence and said that he is eagerly looking forward to the keen competition in store. He said that he was informed that Jamaican pugilist, Sakima Mulling is participating in the tournament.
The last time the two clashed at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Mulling had prevailed on points. Eastman said that he will be going all out to reverse that decision. His coach, Mark Thom, is also confident that his charge will dominate the tournament and cart off the top prize. The other coaches all expressed confidence in their charges.
