At the age of 59, many persons would be considering not too strenuous activities, however, there are some that are ‘young at heart’ and can still rival their younger counterparts. One such individual is Aaron Blackman, well known youth and community activist and sports organiser. Blackman successfully completed last weekend’s Wartsila 20K Road Race, which was won by Guyana’s Cleveland Forde and Trinidad’s Tonya Nero respectively.
He finished the event in 48th position out of a field of 52; not bad for the ‘Old Boy’ as many would say, he is testimony that once persons maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and a balanced diet, they can even in their ripe old age still find the preverbal ‘fountain of youth’.
Aaron will celebrate his 60th birth anniversary on July 26 this year. His time for the Wartsila race was 2hrs 15mins and he was the oldest athlete in the Open category.
He indicated that he hopes many persons; both young and old would become involved in some form of exercise and more so, compete in sporting activities.
He called on the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) to introduce a Seniors Athletic Championship on their calendar of activities, catering for athletes 35 years and over.
‘Ras Blackman’ as he is popularly known, congratulated the Wartsila Company for their initiative in staging the race, which is the most lucrative distance athletic event ever staged locally, with $3.3M in prize money.
He expressed the hope that other companies would follow suit in investing in the development of our youths.
He indicated that he will continue to be active and train for other events in the future, encouraging others to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle which will contribute to a healthy Guyanese populace.
