Martin Permaul and Gilbert Mendonca turned in commendable performances to lead Mix Up to victory when the final of the Whyte Bar/Mark Wiltshire dominoes competition was contested on Sunday night last at Best Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
Permaul and Mendonca chalked 12 and 11 games respectively as Mix Up scored 48 to beat Assassin, who finished with 42 and Brothers, who drew the bye to the final, on 39. Lyndon Bowman made 20 and Claris Whitehead 10 for the runner up team, while Narine Sankar and Berchan White were Brothers’ leading players with 11 and 9 games in that order.
Mix Up marked 46 games to win the semifinal ahead of Assassin on 42 and Pacesetters 38. Mark Wiltshire made 11 and Permaul 10 for Mix Up, Clarence Whitehead top scored for Assassin with 11 and Andrew Young made 10. Colin Thomas scored 10 and Osmond Braithwaite 9 for Pacesetters.
In the first quarterfinal, Mix Up 45 triumphed over Assassin 42 and Specialist 38. Wiltshire led Mix Up with 11 games and was ably assisted by Winston Stevens 9. Clarence Whitehead and Andrew Young were Assassins’ leading players with 11 and 10 games respectively, while Andrew Mendonca made 10 for Specialist.
In the second quarterfinal, Pacesetters tallied 46 games to beat Brothers 43 and West Side 42. Kanhai Samaroo made 11 and Colin Thomas 9 for the winners, while Bertram White marked 10 for Brothers and Ganesh Sankar 12 for West Side.
Mix Up received a trophy and $60,000, Assassin $30,000 and Brothers $20,000. The competition was played on a 20/20 two in one out, 4-game basis.
