Andre ‘Padlock’ Green of the Trojan Cycling club put a lock on the rest of the field to ride away with top honours in the Courts sponsored feature Mashramani 40 miles cycle road race Sunday. The event, which was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice and was for Berbicians only, saw Green winning from 22 other cyclists.
The race started from Marks Bridge at No 60 Stanleytown around 09:00 hrs with the riders being sent on their way by Regional Chairman, Region 6, David Armogan and proceeded to Adventure on the Corentyne before returning to finish in front of Courts’ building at Main and St Ann Streets in New Amsterdam.
The event was actually a battle among riders of the FACC and Trojan Cycle clubs. The early lead was taken by the FACC pair of Wasim Hassnu and Edmond Francis as they opened a gap on the pack. Soon it was Francis that was in the lead as he dropped Hassnu. However the chasing pack was beginning to close in and soon connected with the front riders. The Trojan Trio of Green, Romello Crawford and Jeban Crawford soon staged a breakaway of their own and opened a slight advantage.
The trio battled at the front and it was Green who overpowered the Crawford brothers to ride away and cross the finish line with ease in the end. Romello Crawford came in second with Jeban Crawford third. Veteran Turhan Harris riding in Carlton Wheelers colours then lead then pack of veteran riders to occupy the other three spots with Hassnu and Wilbert Benjamin of Flying Ace occupying the other two spots.
Green along with Romello and Jeban Crawford had an excellent day as they also took the prize for being the top three juniors on show.
The trio of Harris, Hassnu and Benjamin also took the top veteran prizes.
The sprint prizes were shared by Green with four, Jeban Crawford with two, Romello Crawford one and Francis one.
A special beginner’s race was also held which saw the 11 riders pedaling off from the Marks Bride and finished in front of the Courts Furniture store, a distance of two and a half miles. The winner was David Sampson, followed by Michael Noel, Jason Sampson and Symion Allicock. The girls’ event was won by Shemika Teixeira with overseas based pair of Aaliyah Benjamin and Alexis Benjamin occupying the other two spots.
At the simple presentation ceremony, Manager of the company’s New Amsterdam Branch, Mr. Stanley McKenzie, presented the winners with their prizes. The manager reiterated that the company is always willing to give back to the community from which it garners its support. He stated that it is a well-known fact that Courts has been supporting community and sporting activities throughout Guyana and is one of the biggest corporate sponsors in the country.
He said that Courts was happy to be part of bring back cycling to the fore in Berbice and promised to continue their support.
Roberts again thanked Courts for being an excellent corporate citizen and expressed the club’s gratitude. He reiterated his call for other business entity to come on board and support.
The police led by Officer In charge of Traffic, Superintendent Calvin Brutus, Inspector Williams and Sergeant Thomas, were commended once again for doing an excellent job, amidst the busy Mash day crowd in Berbice.
