Two schools added, 8-team competition kicks off
Female Inter Secondary School football action returned to the West Demerara yesterday when the National Association of Women Football (NAWF) kicked off their Under-17 eight-team tournament at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
Defending champions Leonora opposed Zeeburg in the lone Group B fixture yesterday from 15:30hrs, the same time Uitvlugt and St. John’s will face off from today.
According to organizer, Chevon Monchoir, the respective schools have been preparing their players from the start of the new school term and are all eager to showcase their skills.
The two new schools that were added are Patentia Secondary from the West Bank of Demerara and the West Coast based, Stewartville Secondary. Monchoir noted that with the increased interest in the female game, the tournament is expected to be enthralling.
Matches are slated for the Uitvlugt and Den Amstel Community Centre Grounds as well as the West Demerara Secondary School Ground; the competition will run until April 5.
To date, the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation and the Guyana Football Federation have contributed towards the tournament being a success which will maintain the development of female football on the West Demerara through the school system.
