Four days have passed and the whereabouts of Shawn Ramai Kissoon- the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI)’s driver, who is the suspect in the hit-and-run accident last Wednesday on Mandela Avenue, which claimed the life of a 46-year-old man- is still unknown.
Claude McPherson called ‘Chippy’ was struck by an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) and dragged at least 100 yards from the point of impact. He was found in front of a shop with his bicycle badly mangled. His leg was severely crushed.
The father of six died a few hours after the accident at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Luckily, eyewitnesses managed to take note of the vehicle’s registration number and handed it over to the police and the dead man’s relatives.
Less than an hour after the accident, Kissoon reportedly parked a damaged vehicle bearing the same registration number PRR 2923 as the one involved in the accident, in the water company’s Vlissingen Road and Church Street compound.
In a statement, GWI said that the driver reported to work the following day and submitted a written report of an accident. According to GWI, the driver claimed that he hit a horse and asked for time off to visit a relative in the hospital.
The driver, who has been working at the water company for the last six months, has not reported for duty since the accident. Information of the damaged vehicle parked in GWI’s compound somehow got to the ears of the dead man’s relatives who went to GWI and confirmed the news.
Yesterday, the dead man’s wife, Marissa McPherson said that she along with a police officer went to the driver’s home and met with his wife.
“The wife said that she doesn’t know where he (Kissoon) is so I ask her how come she doesn’t know and it’s her husband. I asked her for a photograph and she said that she aint got because his family went to the house and collected all,” Mrs. McPherson said.
The devastated woman alleges that the wife of the GWI’s driver who she believed killed her husband did not cooperate with her or the police on sharing the whereabouts of the missing driver. “I had to tell her that I am the wife of the man her husband killed and she said she is sorry for what happened.”
“The wife said that he (Kissoon) will go into the station today (yesterday) with a lawyer but he didn’t go in up to now,” Mrs. McPherson said.
“I am not taking this easy. I want justice for my husband’s death. The police need to solve this case,” Mrs. McPherson lamented.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News visited the home of Shawn Ramai Kissoon, the front door and windows were tightly secured. Neighbours said that Kissoon was not seen at his home since the accident.
Investigations are ongoing.
