A litterbug who fled police custody as he was being brought before the courts was yesterday sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond after he confessed to the crime.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard that Jermaine Joel who escaped was attempting to evade a charge for unlawfully depositing waste.
According to the City Constabulary, on February 26 at Church Street, Georgetown (a public place) he deposited waste. Two days later on South Road, in the vicinity of the High Court, he allegedly escaped from Police Corporal 1169 James Garnett.
Joel, who did not provide the court with any fixed place of abode, admitted to both misdemeanours and told the Magistrate that he regretted his actions.
Lance Corporal Renetta Bentham who represented the Prosecution, explained that about 08:55 hours on February 28, the accused was being escorted by Corporal Garnett, Lance Corporal Thompson and Constable Bruce to Court 10 (the said court) for the offence of depositing of waste.
As he was in the vicinity of the High Court he reportedly kicked off his slippers and ran east on South Road then turned north on King Street.
An alarm was reportedly raised and several persons chased after Joel but he escaped. The Prosecution said, however, that about 19:45 hours that night, he was spotted by Corporal Garnett who managed to apprehend him.
Bentham claimed that when cautioned by the Corporal, Joel responded “Officer I’m sorry.”
When presented with the Prosecution’s facts, Joel told Magistrate Chandan-Edmond that he had nothing to say, but indicated that he regrets his actions.
He claimed that this was his first appearance before any court, but after being contradicted by the Prosecution, he later admitted to spending six months behind bars for simple larceny.
In response, the Magistrate informed him that she considered all the factors; both the mitigating and aggravating, and would sentence him to two years in jail. He was also fined $15,000 for littering.
