Jamaica, replying to Guyana’s paltry 117, were dismissed for 294 just after Tea on the second day of their Regional Four-Day First-Class cricket encounter at Sabina Park yesterday to take a 176-run first innings lead and two bonus points so far.
When stumps were drawn Guyana were 32-1 in their second innings with Assad Fudadin on eight and Vishaul Singh also on eight as their team reduced to deficit to 144.
Twenty-four-year-old left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul picked up his ninth five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-76. He got support from leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who bagged 2-82 after Nkrumah Bonner had topped scored with 62 and Horace Miller made an even 50 on debut.
The host resumed on 89-1 and by lunch had progressed to 151-2 off 60 overs after losing overnight batsman Campbell on a flat track on another day blessed with glorious sunshine.
The 21-year-old left-handed Campbell added 18 to his overnight 32 to post an exact debut 50 from 219 minutes and 158 balls decorated with eight boundaries before he tried to punch a back-of-a-length delivery from Keon Joseph and edged a catch to the keeper.
Campbell’s demise came 24 minutes before lunch as he failed to make the most of his chance on 40 when Permaul put him down off his own bowling.
After lunch, Bonner who began the session on 42, pounced on leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and smashed him for four to reach his half-century.
Burly Jamaican Captain Tamar Lambert hit 21-year-old rookie leg-spinner Amir Khan, who operated in tandem with the more senior Bishoo, for a thumping four through extra cover before dumping him for a six back over his head in the same over much to the delight of the handful of spectators.
When Lambert was caught behind off Barnwell for 22, his team was still well placed on 180-4 but the spinners brought Guyana back into the game by taking three wickets for two runs after Lunch and the home team slipped to 200-6.
Bonner pulled a short ball from Bishoo high to short mid-wicket at 198 just when the Jamaican One-Day Skipper was beginning to look ominous. He batted for 200 minutes and faced 166 balls while reaching the boundary nine times on a fast outfield which looked surprisingly lush green in the middle of a dry season here in Jamaica.
Jermaine Blackwood stroked Barnwell for consecutive boundaries before Fudadin at silly point put down a sharp reflex catch on the second attempt off Bishoo with him on 13.
David Bernard then fell to Bishoo for a duck at 199-6 and Blackwood did not add to his score when he had his reprieve, being caught by Ronsford Beaton at mid-on as he tried to go over the top to Permaul two runs later.
Andre Russell came out in a no-nonsense mood and clobbered eight fours in a pugnacious 42-ball innings of 44, which lasted 42 minutes before Permaul trapped him LBW on the stroke of Tea at 250-8 as the visitors captured six wickets in the second session which yielded 99 runs.
Jermaine Blackwood’s drive cause bowler Barnwell and Umpire Mills from England to take evasive action.
Russell hammered Permaul for three consecutive fours and the last one flew past his head like a bullet before hitting the sightscreen with a resounding thud.
After Tea, Jerome Taylor, who has a Test ton to his name, joined Jamie Merchant, who swept Bishoo for a ferocious boundary, while Taylor climbed into Permaul and dumped him for successive sixes.
And when Beaton, who went wicket-less despite an impressive opening spell yesterday morning, was brought back Taylor greeted him with an exquisite drive down the ground for four when he pitched up and followed it up an exhilarating hook for another boundary when Beaton tested him with a quick bouncer next.
However Beaton was too fast for last man Sheldon Cotterell (3) and scattered his stumps to end the innings 33 minutes after Tea, leaving Taylor unbeaten on 18 with three fours and a sixe.
When Guyana began their second innings, Sewnarine Chattergoon (13) was taken at cover off a lively Taylor to leave Guyana on 19-1 as Taylor and Russell bent their backs and tested the openers with some vicious bouncers.
The diminutive Singh and fellow left-hander Fudadin saw Guyana safely to the close without further loss.
