The final of the inaugural Anamayah Memorial Inter-Club Basketball competition for teams in Berbice lived up to all expectations when top teams, New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers, faced off for the coveted title last Sunday at the Port Mourant Training Centre Court.
In the end it was the New Amsterdam Warriors which emerged the hungrier unit and held their nerves to eke out a nail biting 50-49 points win in the game that went all the way down to the wire.
Warriors, who had beaten Rockers when they met earlier in a group encounter, looked prepared for battle as they attacked and got on the scoreboard first. In fact, Warriors were piling on the pressure early, establishing a healthy lead in the first half, 27-15, after the first quarter and 36-24 at half time.
The Rockers, after a shaky start, took some time to settle and began to make inroads in the third quarter as they clawed their way back into the game to be behind by three points 37-40.
The last stanza was nerve-racking and with the score at 49-50, both teams missed chances as the final whistle blew to bring an end to the encounter and jubilation to the Warriors’ bench for the close triumph.
Top scoring for Warriors were Jarrel Allen with 17 points, while Randy Richardson supported with 16 points. For Rockers, Jamal Felix with 10 and Jason Fraser 9 led their cause.
Richardson was named the player of the final, while Hugh Arthur was named the best player of the tournament. They all received trophies.
The win placed Warriors as the number one team in Berbice with Rockers number two, while the other placings were: Rose Hall Town Jammers third, Fyrish Black Shark fourth, East Canje Knights fifth and Rose Hall Town ending in the cellar in sixth position.
The top five teams will represent Berbice in the Inaugural National Basketball competition dubbed Road to Mecca which is billed to begin on Saturday 1st March and the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.
The competition was organised and coordinated by Sports enthusiast Vibert “Town man” Garrett and was sanctioned by the newly formed Berbice Basketball Association (BABA), with the final being attended by newly elected president of the Guyana Basketball Federation Mr. Nigel Hinds and BABA president Keith Myers and Vice
President Amanda Henry.
Mr. Hinds, a former national Basketball player, was on his third trip to Berbice since taking up the office. He spoke to the players before the game and congratulated both teams for reaching the final. He gave them the assurance that their efforts will eventually pay off as long as they have discipline and are prepared to work hard. (Samuel Whyte)
