National Men and Women Singles Champions, Sudesh Fitzgerald and Rosetta Hiralall, distinguished themselves from among their peers when they both rebounded from losing positions to capture the top honours in their respective categories when the curtain came down on the Mashramani Darts Classic at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Saturday February 22 last.
Fitzgerald defeated Anil Lachhman 3-2 and claimed the prize won by the
latter player in 2013, thus inscribing his name on the lien trophy for the second time after performing the feat in 2012. Lachhman sped ahead after winning the first two games but Fitzgerald underlined his status as national champion by storming back to take the next three games. Ricardo Madhoo then defeated Anthony Bissoondyal 2-1 to seal off the final podium spot.
The female matches were just as enthralling after Shondell Hyles seemed set to upset the national champion Rosetta Hiralall even after the latter player had won the first game. Hyles rebounded with a win in the second game and surged ahead after winning the third.
It was then that Hiralall called on her reserves to comfortably win the final two games to retain her dominance. The 3rd place went to veteran Jean DeSouza who defeated the other losing semi-finalist, Melissa Smart 2-1.
The other results are: Mixed Doubles 501: Sudesh Fitzgerald/S Persaud (1st), Sherwyn Greene partnered by newcomer Shondell Hale (2nd) while 3rd place went to Colin France who partnered with Shondell Hyles to defeat Lallchand Rambharose and Rosetta Hiralall.
Men’s Doubles 501: Sudesh Fitzgerald and Ricardo Madhoo defeated Colin France & Anil Lachhman 3-1 to take that title while 3rd place went to Sherwyn Greene and Anthony Bissoondyal who defeated Andrew Balchand & Chris Fulton.
Mixed Triples 701: Sherwyn Greene/Rosetta Hiralall/Lallchand Rambharose won from Andrew Balchand/Chris Fulton/Hemwattie Amyan, 2-1. The 3rd place went to Sudesh Fitzgerald/Mary Correia/Nicholas Seetaram who defeated the other losing semi-finalists, Adrian Damon/Melissa Smart/Nicholas Murray, 2-1.
Sudesh Fitzgerald and Anil Lachhman threw 16 darts and eventually won the award for the Shortest Game while Andrew Balchand scored the Highest Amount of Points to Finish a Game (128). Lallchand Rambharose scored three 180s, the most by any player and duly won that prize.
Sudesh Fitzgerald won the Len’s Trophy while the other winners received cash prizes.
