Three men and a woman were yesterday arraigned by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for having in their possessing different quantities of marijuana.
The four appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and were prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant for the crime.
At the end of their separate court hearings, Sharmattie Rambarran and Steve Braithwaite were ordered to do community service and pay a fine while Junior Caesar and Sean Marshal, 35, are soon to face trial for the alleged crime.
Clarke, who is a vendor, was prosecuted for having 84 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking on Republic Day (February 23) at Main Street, Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty and was later remanded to prison for the crime.
According to Grant, Caesar was seen sitting in front of Tower Hotel when police ranks observed him acting in a suspicious manner. The vendor was searched and a plastic bag containing the substance was found in a black plastic bag on the ground next to him.
Grant objected to him being granted bail stating that Caesar raised no special reasons for bail. His matter was transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman for report and fixture on March 5.
Marshal, who resides at Lot 104 Meadowbrook Gardens, was charged and pleaded not guilty to having 7 grams of cannabis in his possession on the same day on Main Street, Georgetown.
Grant indicated to the court that ranks on patrol on ‘Mash’ day noticed him on Main Street acting suspicious. During the search, he reportedly threw a black parcel away.
According to the Prosecution, the ranks then retrieved it and found a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems which the suspected to be cannabis. He was arrested and later charged for the offence.
He was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 and the case was transferred to Magistrate Faith McGusty for trial.
Meanwhile, Stereo Sonic’s truck driver Steve Braithwaite of Diamond Scheme confessed to having 1 gram of cannabis on February 22.
He was fined $3000 and ordered to do community service at the Golden Grove Police Station every Wednesday for the next six months.
Charged too for drug possession was 26-year-old Sharmattie Rambarran of Lot 58 Block ‘F’ East La Penitence. She pleaded guilty to having 3 grams of cannabis in her possession and was ordered to complete six months of community service at the Palms Geriatric Home.
She will also pay a fine of $3000.
