K/News pressman’s ID card found at robbery scene

Police have detained a man whose National Identification card was found in the home of former assistant Commissioner of Police Clinton Conway following an armed robbery last Thursday.
The young man, who is a pressman at this newspaper, was arrested at his home early yesterday morning after investigators used the ID card to track him down.
The suspect, who is being held at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost, will have to come up with a valid explanation of how his ID card ended up at the robbery scene, since his initial explanation is not being bought by investigators.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect told police that he had lost his ID card several months ago.
Police said that the suspect is a 23-year-old who dropped the document at Conway’s home while struggling with his victim.
Contrary to earlier reports, 60-year-old Conway was not the only person at home when the attack occurred.
According to police sources, the former Assistant Police Commissioner came home around noon last Thursday to find a young man holding his son-in-law at gunpoint and ransacking the house.
A struggle ensued between Conway and the robber, during which the intruder struck Conway on the head with his firearm. The suspect and an accomplice reportedly escaped with some $300,000 and two mobile phones.
Conway was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
