An 18-year-old dredge labourer who hails from Mahdia was yesterday charged for allegedly burgling a house and making off with over three hundred thousand dollars worth in jewellery and electronic items, almost two weeks ago.
Elton Calder is accused of breaking into the dwelling house of Omani Spencer and stealing a $180,000 laptop, one $35,000 Sony camera and two gold chains valued at $150,000.
At the court hearing, he was prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant and defended by Attorney at Law Paul Fung-a-Fat.
Fung-a-Fat claimed that the police’s case is that two men pursued his client to purchase the items and he did.
According to the lawyer, the accused in turn called his neighbour to purchase the items and was later held by the police.
He applied for bail stating that if refused a court bond his client who has no priors would be held “too long in prison” since the matter would be transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court and the next sitting is scheduled for April.
The Prosecution offered no objections, thus it was allowed in the sum of $200,000. The Chief Magistrate indicated that the condition attached to the bond is that Calder should report to the Subordinate Officer at the Mahdia Police Station every Friday at 15:00 hours.
The matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court where it will engage the attention of Magistrate Allan Wilson on April 4.
