Bandits shot a 31-year-old porter and escaped with $15,000 and a mobile phone during a brazen attack yesterday on a delivery truck in Independence Boulevard, Albouystown.
Krishna Nanoo, of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with a gunshot wound to the right side. He was still undergoing surgery up to late yesterday evening.
Nanoo and a truck driver, both employees of Sunfood Enterprise, had just made a delivery of confectionery and beverages at an Albouystown shop when they came under attack.
The driver told Kaieteur News that he was preparing to park in Independence Boulevard at around 16:00 hrs when he observed two men sitting on the roadside. He said that as he was parking the men stood and headed in the opposite direction.
After Nanoo had made his delivery at a nearby shop, the employees returned to the truck and were about to drive off, when one of the men that the driver had seen earlier “rolled up” to the vehicle.
The driver said that the man then pointed a gun at him and ordered him to “pass the thing.”
He recalled that the bandit was short, dark in complexion and was wearing a black t-shirt and a black cap with a red peak.
“I say ‘brother man, I ain’t got nothing’ and he say ‘I doan want hear that, pass everything.’”
The driver said that he then gave the robber his cell phone, while Nanoo gave the gunman $15,000 – the day’s sales to that point.
He said that Nanoo then opened the cab door and tried to flee, and the robber shot him in the side before escaping on foot.
The shopkeeper to whom they had made the delivery took the injured man to the GPHC. Kaieteur News understands that the injury does not appear to be life-threatening.
