Police Progressive Youth Club’s (PPYC) Olympian, Winston George became a national senior sprint double champion yesterday when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) hosted the 2013 National Senior Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground.
The AAG did not host the competition last year and as part of their International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) obligations was forced to host the 2013 event in 2014 at the Police Club at Eve Leary after

missing the calendar last year.
George proved why he may be arguably the best sprinter in Guyana at the moment when he won both the 200m and 400m events with impressive performances. Before his 200m race, the PPYC, George strode to a 400m title in 48.80 seconds ahead of junior sensation, School Championships’ winner, Jason Yaw (49.80) and Dequawn Vancooten (51.20) respectively.
Both Yaw and Vancooten are from the Running Brave Athletics Club camp. George underscored his superiority when he blasted 21.50 seconds to claim the 200m ahead of Kevin Abbensetts, who had 21.90 seconds and Aranze Chance’s 22.20 seconds.
Guyana Defence Force’s Akeem Stewart sprinted to the 100m national title in the relatively slow 10.90 seconds, while Enmore Owen Adonis (11.10) and Kenneth Semple (11.20) finished second and third respectively in one of the slowest marquee races.
Alisha Fortune quelled all critics on her selection for the South American Games in Chile with a masterful performance in the Women’s 100m. Fortune won in 12.4 seconds ahead of rival Leota Babb and junior Shoquane Daniels, who had 12.50 and 12.90 respectively.
Running Braves’ Natricia Hooper held on for a win in the Women’s 200m race in 25.60 seconds ahead of the 15-year-old Jevina Sampson, who was second in 25.90 seconds and PPYC, Tiffany Carto, who finished third in 26.20 seconds. The juniors dominated the race though it was a senior competition.
The trend continued when Sampson sprinted her way to the 400m title in 59.20 seconds ahead of Running Brave team-mate, Natrena Hooper (1:00.60) and PPYC, Nadine Rodrigues’ (1:02.90) in that order, becoming one of the youngest national senior champions.
Police’s Jenella Jonas won the Women’s 800m in 2:30.90, ahead of Fortune’s daughter, Andrea Foster and Cassie Kirton, who had 2:35.50 and 2:36.30 respectively. Foster then turned the tables on Jonas in the 1500m, winning for Running Brave in 5:12.20 as Jonas ended in 5:24.10 and the Lindener, Cassie Kirton (5:24.30) third.
Alika Morgan won the 3000m Women race in 20:37.10 ahead of Guyana Defence Force’s Alicia Jack (22:27.40). PPYC Shion Boyer did not finish the race.
Kevin Bayley reacted to his non-selection for the South American Games with a blistering 800m performance. The PPYC Bayley ran 1:56.80 to beat Running Braves’ Cleveland Thomas 1:59.60 and Orin Prince 2:03.30 respectively. South American Games selectee, Wayne Harlequin for the 800m, did not finish the race owed to respiratory problems.
Thomas, however, returned a dominant performance in the 1500m race, leading from the front in a commanding effort to win in 4:13.60 with team-mate, Winston Missigher second in 4:13.90, as Jamoul Chisholm (4:18.50) finished third.
Cleveland Forde had earlier underlined his reputation as the leading distance runner in Guyana in a masterful 5000m race. Forde won in 15:44.00 ahead of Nathaniel Giddings (16:37.70) and Carl McKenzie (17:20.70) respectively.
In other results:
