Consistent tactical approaches by police ranks attached to ‘D’ Division of the Guyana Police Force have proven to be effective, not only in the interception of criminal elements, but also the reduction of such activities in a number of Region Three communities.
Classic examples of meticulous police work were particularly evident on Friday last when ranks were able to solve not one but three daring robberies. In fact, the perpetrators in each instance were arrested and are set to face the court, possibly today.
Aside from a robbery that was committed on a gas station at Nismes on the West Bank of Demerara, which was reported on in this publication, there were two others that were equally dramatic.
In the case of the gas station robbery, five young men were apprehended a matter of hours after the incident which occurred around 10:30 hours on Friday.
This was however, a continuance of strategic police work that had started earlier in the day.
According to Police in a statement, around 15:45 hours Friday, a 52-year-old taxi driver, Narine Bahadur, of Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara, was attacked and robbed of his Carina motor car and the sum of $5,000 by two men who had hired him at Vreed-en-Hoop to take them to Parika. However, while in the vicinity of New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, the men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, held up Bahadur and took away his vehicle.
The matter was reported and ranks were soon dispatched to hunt down the perpetrators. The response would soon yield result as the police were able to recover the vehicle at a location in Vreed-en-Hoop.
Added to this, investigations, according to Police, led to the arrest of the perpetrators in a restaurant at Harlem, West Coast Demerara, and the recovery of an unlicensed .38 Taurus revolver. The men are in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police ranks were also instrumental in handling a robbery carried out on a man while a patron of the Chill-Out Bar at Wallers Delight, West Coast Demerara. According to Police the man was robbed by two men on a motor-cycle of a gold chain valued at $800,000 and $80,000 cash. Both men were apprehended.
In helping to tackle criminal activities on the West Demerara, anti-crime ranks are often strategically placed in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge where they are able to monitor the movement of persons across the interconnecting path which some criminal elements are known to use as a getaway route.
In fact, three of the perpetrators involved in the gas station robbery were intercepted aboard a minibus en-route to the eastern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge by ranks conducting a road block there.
