There has been an $80M allocation for a navigational aid upgrade within the local aviation industry, says Michael Correia, President of Aircraft Owners’ Association of Guyana.
According to Correia, the introduction of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) programme is on stream with a six-month pilot being implemented. The timeline of the programme is three years.
Zulfikar Mohamed, Director General of GCAA, said that the ADS-B would allow Guyana’s airspace to accommodate four times as many traffic or aircraft operations. He said that the acquisition of ADS-B, a system used for air traffic surveillance, will allow each aircraft to broadcast its own GPS position along with other information including heading, ground track, ground speed and altitude.
Mohamed explained that receivers on the ground equipped with the information would send it to air traffic control displays. The ADS-B information can be used to augment existing primary and secondary (transponder-based) radar or used in lieu of those radar technologies.
If this were to be accomplished, it would add to works done in 2013, which resulted in the continued modernization of the Air Navigation Services (ANS).
Mohamed added that in 2013 a few capital projects were undertaken including the supply and installation of HF Radios and Security System at the Control Tower and supply and installation of a VOR/DME System at Timehri.
According to Anthony Mekdeci, Chief Executive Officer of Ogle International Airport, possibly by year-end the Ogle International Airport will be the recipient of a VOR/DME System from Government.
He explained that the old VOR/DME System at CJIA Air Traffic Services when replaced will be repaired and given to Ogle International Airport.
Mekdeci said that the VOR/DME System at CJIA is used extensively by the Air Traffic Control Unit by the airport to regulate in-bound and out-bound traffic in its airspace. That piece of equipment is being replaced currently by a new unit which is not yet commissioned, he said.
He added that to commission the equipment CJIA has to conduct flight checks.
“The VOR/DME because of its great potential has to be flight check for accuracy every 12 months. They give you up to 13 months to flight check to ensure that it retains its accuracy,” he said.
Mekdeci said that the VOR/DME is very important because of the proximity of the two airports. It would enable good accurate control of aircraft operations.
