The man who brutally stabbed to death his nephew after the youth had spurned him for a woman, will have to face a judge and jury.
Roy Lewis, 36, of Glasgow Housing Scheme was charged with murdering Devon Da Silva called Devon Lewis, 18,
on Thursday December 27, 2012 at Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice. On Friday he was committed to stand trial at the next criminal session of the Berbice High Court. This was after the completion of a preliminary inquiry conducted by Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs-Marcus found that a prima facie case had been made out against him.
Lewis led his own defence.
Da Silva, 18, of Lot 54 Sisters Village was stabbed to death while in bed with his girlfriend Ashley Whyte called “Toya”, 18, at her parents’ home Lot 112 Sisters Village. His attacker was reportedly a jealous man who had become obsessed with the youth.
The teen had jumped through a window to escape his attacker, but died before receiving medical attention. His girlfriend was also injured.
The crime of passion came about after the youth was constantly abused, seduced and threatened by the jealous man. The youth who was reportedly forced into a longstanding intimate relationship with Lewis, was reportedly asleep beside his girlfriend when Lewis entered the house and stabbed him several time about his body.
Lewis then reportedly ingested a poisonous substance and was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital. He was subsequently discharged and charged for the crime.
The man had threatened to kill the youth after the teen stopped accepting gifts from him. Lewis who was a seaman stopped working at sea and sought employment at the same place with Da Silva.
He started to slash the youth’s bicycle wheel and reportedly attempted to feed him food laced with poison on a few occasions.
Da Salvia had eventually sought employment in the interior to get away from his predator and had only returned to the area a few days earlier to be with his relatives and his girlfriend when the man stalked and pounced on him.
The matter was reported to the welfare department and the police. The accused was charged with using threatening language. He had also attacked and injured the youth and placed a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him for spurning him and telling people about their relationship.
The man was reportedly seen earlier at a fun day which was held nearby stalking the youths and showing them a knife he was carrying.
The youth was about 14 years when the accused first forced him into an intimate relationship. The prosecution had called several witnesses.
