A 32-year-old bonds keeper was yesterday brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing a large quantity of eyedrops and insulin from the International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA) some time last year.
Orandi Davis, of Lot 249 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was arraigned by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who subsequently granted bail for the larceny by clerk/servant charge which he faced.
Between October 29 and November 8, last year, in Georgetown he allegedly stole 79 vials of eyedrops valued at $277,186 and 180 vials of insulin which cost $34,900 from IPA.
He, however, pleaded not guilty and made an application for reasonable bail through his lawyer, Gordon Gilhuys.
Davis’s case is being prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant who did not reveal the details of the alleged theft. He, however, offered objections to bail stating that the accused is a flight risk.
According to Grant, Davis may not return to face his charges since he had been informed by the investigating rank that Davis had never returned to the station even though he was mandated to assist them with investigations.
The Inspector insisted that the only reason the former bonds clerk appeared in court yesterday was because he was rearrested.
In his bail application, Gilhuys stated that his client is currently unemployed but he was the bond keeper of IPA at the time when he and other staff members were arrested on account of the missing items.
He said the persons apprehended were taken to the station but on Thursday the police chose to bring Davis before the courts. Gilhuys indicated too that his client has had no previous brushes with the law.
The Chief Magistrate ruled in favour of the defence and offered bail in the sum of $80,000. The case was adjourned to March 21.
