Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Shemaine Campbelle were named the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year
2013 when the National Sports Commission (NSC) panel convened at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday to select the outstanding sports personalities based on the nominations from the respective associations. Jason Yaw and Chelsea Edghill claimed the junior honours.
Chanderpaul took the award ahead of runner-up Sportsman, Weightlifter Winston Stoby at 7-5 in the voting. Campbelle, who was nominated from the floor (among the panelists) by Kaieteur Sport Rep, Claude David, after not previously being nominated by any association, won 10-4 from runner-up Sportswoman Alysa Xavier of Hockey fame.
Campbelle was part of the West Indies team that placed second to Australia in the Women’s world tournament, turning in several outstanding performances including a century batting at number 7 to save face for the Windies ladies.
Sprinter Jason Yaw had an excellent year as well as Table Tennis star Chelsea Edghill and following the respective balloting Yaw took the honours 8-4 from runner up Sherman Britton, while Edghill came ahead of the talented Cassie George 8-6. George was voted as the runner up.
On the list of outstanding personalities were Terrence Poole (boxing), who was named the Coach of the year, beating Carl Ince (Squash) 7-3, Godfrey Munroe (Table Tennis) Male Sports Personality, Amanda Hermanstine (Athletics) the Female Sports Personality, Most Improved Association – the Guyana Boxing Association, Sports Association
of the year went to Table Tennis and the Sports Team of the year was the Guyana Senior Squash Team.
Orlando Charles was the Sports Photographer of the year, Avenash Ramzan the Sports Journalist non print and Chris Campbell Sports Journalist Print. Gibran Sarfaraz will receive the special award for Persons with Disability.
Director of Sports Neil Kumar chided the tardiness of some associations in their late submission of nomination and some not at all. He informed that out of the 33 national associations or federations, only 13 actually submitted nominations.
The Awards presentation is set for March 28 at the National Cultural Centre.
