Ryan Ramdass and Mahendra Nagamootoo are the only two Guyanese cricketers plying their trade in Trinidad’s premier League competition with West Indies Test experience and the pair has been making waves in the Twin Island Republic with outstanding performances in the 2014 competition.
The 30-year-old Ramdass played his only Test against host Sri Lanka in 2005 and is among those shortlisted for the Guyana squad preparing for this year’s Regional four-day tournament which commences on February 28 with Guyana facing five times defending champions Jamaica in Kingston.
The solid right-handed opener last week spearheaded his club Clarke Road to a seven wicket win over Comets with a commanding unbeaten 119 in the TTCB 50-over tournament.
Led by 80 from former West Indies ‘A’ team player Richard Kelly, Comets made 212-6 before Ramdass, who has three tons in 21 First-Class matches for Guyana, struck 13 fours and two sixes and got good support from fellow Guyanese Rajiv Ivan, who made 58 not out with five fours and two sixes.
On Sunday Clarke Road defeated Moosai Sports by 49 runs with T&T player Yannick Ottley making 86 not out. Guyanese Ranga Latchana scored 71 and Ramdass, who was one of five cricketers of the League last year, got 54.
Last year, Ramdass scored three centuries in Trinidad to help his team to second place in the League before returning home to participate in Guyana’s inter-county competition where his performances earned him a call-up in the Guyana 26-man First-Class training squad. Ramdass last played for Guyana in 2005.
At 38, Leg-spinner Nagamootoo’s Test and First-Class career is long over, ending as the leading wicket taker in
Regional cricket with 331 wickets, breaking the previous record of the 270 held by countryman Clyde Butts. His five Tests were played in five different continents and his 68 against Australia at Sydney is his best Test score.
The leg-spinner, who also played league cricket in England, has been among the wickets for Munroe Road with his latest performance being a four-wicket haul on Sunday.
