The Guyana Sports and Development Foundation (GSDF) Coaching programme came to an end on Saturday last with more than thirty Coaches/Teachers being instructed on the basics of Soccer coaching.
All Coaches/Teachers are attached to schools competing in the 2014, Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Tournament, which starts on March 15, 2014.
Technical Director, Stanley Harmon, a New York based Soccer coach said he was satisfied that the overall objectives and achievements of the programme were accomplished. Harmon said even though he had some concerns about the Georgetown Group and their timings, the programme was an overall success.
Harmon credited the New Amsterdam Group as being the most outstanding group when compared to Georgetown and Linden.
This is the fourth year of the programme, but the second year that Linden and New Amsterdam are participating; however the New Amsterdam Group of coaches/teachers remained intact, while Linden and Georgetown had some new faces.
This however, will in no way impact the programme, since each school will be paired with a coach from the Guyana National Coaches Association.
The partnership between the GSDF and the National Coaches Association will make up for any lack of knowledge for new or absent coaches/teachers.
Harmon said, “The product that we are going to put out should be even across the board, because each school is going to have a coach from the national coaching staff working with them. We have also given them (Coaches/Teachers) sufficient documentation that they can review in case they miss certain or should they need to refresh themselves on certain aspects of what was taught. From that stand point it should be complete, but the help of the national coaches will be invaluable in terms of helping them to execute a lot of the concepts.”
The Technical Director said, while many of the coaches were knowledgeable on the game, they lacked the knowledge to teach the game. According to him, it will take some time for them (Coaches/Teachers) to grasp all the concepts of the game, but in time and with more training supplemented with the documentation provided they are going to become better.
On the expectations for this year’s tournament, Harmon said there is never enough time to be really ready for any competition, but said he expects marked improvements in the level of play and the standard of the competition.
“We are striving every year to increase the competitiveness of the tournament, but there will be some learning curves, most schools will have new students which will see the competition off to a slow start, but as the tournament progresses this will change.”
Meanwhile, a referee’s seminar will start today at the Carifesta Sports Complex from 9:00hrs. Similar sessions will be done in Berbice tomorrow at the Prison Officers Sports Complex and in Linden on Thursday at the Wismar Secondary School. Starting time is also 9:00hrs.
All sessions will be facilitated by Roy McArthur and Lawrence Griffith, senior referee’s instructors.
