Flight School informs youths of career opportunities
Guyana’s aviation industry is expanding and the country’s lone flight school- Air Services Limited Flight Training School (ASLFTS) is playing a major role to ensure skilled personnel are available.

On Friday, for the second year in a row, the school participated in the University of Guyana’s Career/Open Day to educate students and adults on the opportunities available in the aviation industry.
Embracing the event’s theme, “Honouring the Past, Moulding the Present, Transforming the Future” ASLFTS booth highlighted all aspects of the school; aircraft cockpit instruments; model of the Cessna 172, one of the aircraft used for flight training, and various study materials.
Showcasing the school was the Chief Flight Instructor, Captain Andrew Ebanks, Instructor Captain Antonio Kinch, two current female student pilots, Rebecca Clarke and Leshaun Berkley and the school’s Administrator Olivia Rodrigues.
ASLFTS offers three programmes consisting both Ground and Flight Training to satisfy the requirements of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
What surprised most persons at the event were the fact that students can start the process of becoming a pilot at just 16 ½ years, and the duration for the various programs. One can become a Private Pilot within four to six months, after which they can gain an Instrument Rating within another six to eight months. The Commercial license is attainable in six to eight months once they pass the GCAA written and practical examinations.
Asked about why persons should consider aviation and more so becoming a pilot as a career path, Clarke said, “It offers excitement, freedom and adventure. What more can you ask for in a career?”
Presently, there are 18 students enrolled in the Private and Commercial Programmes. The next Private Pilot Programme is scheduled to commence in September 2014, catering for those who will complete CSEC earlier.
ASLFTS has been in existence since 2003 and is growing rapidly in an effort to produce quality locally trained pilots.
