Following last night’s brazen robbery at Charles and Janice’s Cheap Store, located at Recht-Door-Zee, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, police were able to retrieve a stolen Toyota Premio motorcar.
The vehicle, PSS 1361, was found in a desolated area at Old Road Crane, West Coast Demerara.
According to the couple, Charles James and his wife Janice McLean, four masked men, armed with guns invaded their store at around 20:15hrs on Saturday night, holding a few customers at gunpoint.
James, who is Chairman of La Parfaite Harmonie Policing Group told Kaieteur News that they were about to close their shop to go upstairs when the gunmen forced some of the customers back inside, ordering everybody to give up their belongings.
“Was about 13 ah we went in the shop, including me and my wife. We did already close, but some people de finishing off dey shopping inside. Me and a couple of the customers did standing on the bridge in front of de yard when the men appear from out of nowhere. Dey point the gun at we and force we back into the shop,” James recalled.
He said that as frightened customers emptied their purses and pockets, two male customers who refused to hand over their cell phones and cash were gun-butted.
While two of the bandits raided the store in the bottom flat of the couple’s home, the other two, after disabling several security cameras, stormed the family’s living quarters where they tied up one of James’ daughters.
“Me, my wife and our other daughter was downstairs, but when the bandits go upstairs and they see the other daughter, they taped her mouth and tied her up. After they done pack the money and jewelry that we get upstairs, the bandits come back down in the store.”
James told this newspaper that the attack lasted for about 20 minutes, after which the bandits loaded the family’s car with a large quantity of items, the majority taken from the store, before escaping.
“While two of dem point the gun at we, the other two men did loading up our car with all the thiefin’ things.”
James told this publication that along with three laptops, a DVR, and a large quantity of gents clothing, shoes, boots, colognes and female accessories from the store, the bandits were also able to get away with about 15 cell phones belonging to customers.
Apart from the items taken from the store, and what was taken from the customers, James has estimated his family’s losses at $1.5M.
He said that although robberies are prevalent in the developing La Parfaite Harmonie Housing Scheme, Saturday night’s attack was the first for him and his family.
James, who has been a resident of the area for more than four years, told this publication that his family is traumatized. The man said that the police responded swiftly.
Investigations are continuing.
