Two Enmore housewives were on Friday brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to assault charges which stemmed from an altercation with another woman over a young man who is said to be the husband of neither of the accused.
The housewives, Shaline Hemraj and Soorajdai Jordan, both of Enmore Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara were both charged for assaulting 21-year-old Sherry Ramsaroop on February 10 at Station Street, Kitty.
Hemraj was indicted for common assault and pleaded not guilty to the charge. When questioned whether it was her husband who was the source of the conflict, she responded that it was not her spouse.
Jordan, arrived shortly after a summons had already been issued for her and pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm when it was read to her.
They were both placed on their own recognizance (self-bail) and bonded to keep the peace for two years by the Chief Magistrate. She informed the two housewives that if they are charged before any court again, they will be imprisoned.
Their matter was subsequently transferred to Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for trial.
However, when the three women appeared before Magistrate Chandan-Edmond, the victim (Ramsaroop) decided that she did not want to proceed with the matter.
Under oath she indicated that she would not provide evidence against the two accused and the matter was thereby dismissed. Magistrate Chandan-Edmond sternly reminded the women of the peace bond.
