The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Grassroots Programme is set to commence shortly in various regions of Guyana. The programme, which has been developed due to an initiative undertaken by the WICB, was launched yesterday Banks DIH, Thirst Park.
This cricket development initiative targets individuals between the ages of 11 to 17 of both genders. These locations include regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 and have been demarcated into districts and zones under the established GTU area distribution format.
The GCB/WICB Grass roots programme intends to focus on those who have an interest in cricket but currently possess limited or no cricketing experience, as well as to provide a continuous pathway for those with earlier exposure to the game.
The programme also focuses on other aspects of players’ lives since the demands and commitment that are required from players are very likely to impact other areas including responsibilities and duties to their homes, school work, career goals, and positive approaches to life.
It must be noted, that the GCB aims to achieve their programme goals through the utilization of a number of coaches assigned to a number of community locations.
In so doing, the GCB aims to identify and nurture talent at an early stage through coaching education and competition activities, direct such identified talent to appropriate clubs, utilize the school structure and interest to create an environment of discipline, utilize Schools and Clubs structures to create a professional pathway for individuals and national and international achievement.
The GCB and WICB are grateful for this opportunity to intervene into the lives of the targeted youths and thankful to the support received from the Ministry of Education and its Allied Arts department, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the participating schools, clubs and communities, the media and all those who are likely to play an integral role in the effective execution of the 2014 Grass roots programme.
The following coaches are assigned to the respective counties:
