The full bench of the Caribbean Court of Justice is expected to travel to Guyana for the first time for itinerant sittings come Monday and Tuesday. The sittings will be held at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC) in Liliendaal, and will include a special sitting of the Court in honour of the retirement of the Hon. Mme. Justice Désirée Bernard CCH, OR, Judge of the CCJ bench.
This will be the third itinerant sitting of the Court, with previous sittings being held in Barbados in April 2012, and Jamaica and Barbados in March 2013. The CCJ views these itinerant sittings as important to ensuring that it is accessible to the people of the Caribbean Community which it serves.
When the court’s visit begins on Monday, the appellate jurisdiction hearings will begin with three (3) matters which originated in Guyana being heard. During its visit to Guyana, the Court will also facilitate a Judicial Education Workshop for the Judiciary of Guyana.
The workshop will aim to present themes on the improvement of justice delivery. This workshop will be led by the President of the Court, the Rt. Hon. Sir Dennis Byron and CCJ Judge, the Hon. Mr. Justice Adrian Saunders.
The culmination of the Court’s itinerant visit on Wednesday will be the special sitting in honour of the retirement of the Hon. Mme. Justice Bernard, at the GICC from 10.00 hrs. The full bench of the CCJ will sit, along with the Hon. Mr. Justice Carl Singh, Chancellor of the Judiciary of Guyana.
Also during the visit, addresses will be made to the Court by Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall, His Excellency Irwin LaRocque, Secretary General of CARICOM, Professor Harold Lutchman representing the RJLSC, Mr. Oswald Barnes, representing the CCJ Board of Trustees, Mr. Ronald Burch-Smith, President of the Guyana Bar Association, and Ms. Simone Morris-Ramlall, President of the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers.
The Court Sittings from Monday to Wednesday will be open to the members of the public.
