The inaugural Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc.(GSCL Inc) Republic Cup, which is set to kick off tomorrow, was officially launched yesterday at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) Sports Club. The tournament will be played in two categories, the Open and Over-40 and will be of 20 overs duration.
Preliminary matches will be played at Everest Cricket Club, Police Sports Club ground, GNIC and Demerara Cricket Club tomorrow and Saturday with the finals set for Sunday at Everest while the Open final is expected to be broadcasted live on NCN radio.
In the Open category, Memorex, Regal XI, Bartica Challengers and DVD Titans have been drawn in Zone A, while Zone B consists of Wolf’s Warriors, Farm XI, Speed Boat XI and Trophy Stall. In the Over-40 segment Floodlight, Savage, Regal Masters and Industry Super Kings make up Zone A, while Zone B is comprised of Frontline XI, Mike’s Wellman, Parika Defenders and Success Masters. Teams will play each other once in their respective zones and the top two teams will go through to the semifinals.
In the first round fixtures in the Open category, Bartica Challengers will play Regal XI and DVD Titans will face Memorex in Zone A, while Wolf’s Warriors will come up against Trophy Stall and Farm XI will match skills with Speedboat XI in Zone B.
Floodlight will take on Industry Super Kings and Savage will clash with Regal Masters in the Zone A, while Frontline XI will play Success Masters and Mike’s Wellman will entertain Parika Defenders in the opening fixtures in Zone B of the Over-40 division.
The winning team in the Open division will take home a trophy, $600,000 and medals, while the runner up will pocket a trophy and $200,000. The victorious team in the Over-40 category will receive a trophy, $500,000 and medals, while the runner up will collect a trophy and $200,000. The man of the match in the final and player of the series will be given a trophy and a three piece living room suite respectively.
Speaking at the launching, first vice president of the GSCL, Ian John wished the teams well and said he hoped the tournament will be played in good spirits. He lauded the efforts of his fellow executives for their efforts in organising the competition. He added that play will start at 09:00hrs each day and stressed the need for teams to be on time and thanked the media for their support.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar credited the GSCL for promoting softball, adding that the sport helps to encourage healthy lifestyles. He also stressed the need for fair play and hopes the tournament will be a success.
