Bail was yesterday set at $200,000 for a 56-year-old employee of the Deeds Registry who is accused of fraudulently obtaining $4M for the sale of a plot of land some time last year.
Appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was Bibi Sattaur, of Lot 8 Station Street, Kitty who pleaded not guilty when the charge of obtaining money with the intent to defraud was read to her by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The Prosecution claimed that on March 28, last year, in Georgetown, she obtained the cash from Bibi Akleema Goberdhan by falsely pretending to transfer a plot of land, despite knowing the actions to be false.
The case is being prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant who told the court that whilst Sattaur “sold” the land to Goberdhan, the buyer soon found out that she was a victim of fraud.
According to him, Goberdhan was prevented from claiming the land since it already belonged to someone else, so she reported the matter to the police. Subsequent investigations led to Sattaur’s arrest.
However, in submitting an application for reasonable bail, her lawyer Leslie Sobers refuted the Prosecution’s claims stating that his client had not entered into any agreement with Goberdhan.
According to him, his client is “shocked and amazed” at the allegations leveled against her.
Sattaur was subsequently allowed bail on condition that she reports to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday at 16:00 hours. The case will be called again on March 10 for report and fixtures.
