Dear Editor,
Allow me to take time out to congratulate Peoples National Congress Reform Chairman, veteran politician and Member of Parliament Mr. Basil Williams on his recent accession to the office of Deputy Speaker of the House. Mr. Williams’ decades-long experience in the parliament, coupled with his profound knowledge and familiarity of the Standing Orders, make him a unique replacement to this noble office.
I am confident that Mr. Williams will continue to use his office and position to champion the cause of all Guyanese. Like so many Guyanese, I believe that the critical roles Mrs. Deborah Backer played in the parliament cannot be underestimated. Her contributions are well noted. I wish Mrs. Backer a speedy recovery and await her active involvement in the national body politics of Guyana.
Please also allow me to offer words of congratulations to Dr. Karen Cummings on her election to serve in the Parliament.
Dr. Cummings’ election to serve in the National Assembly has come at a crucial time in the life of the parliament. I am confident that she will not only give of her best, but that she will draw from her wealth of experience and ability to competently serve the people. My only advice to you, Dr. Cummings, is to remain grounded and humble, as you strive to impact the national agenda and help to make the lives of every Guyanese better.
Politics, for me, must always be about the people, especially those who are often forgotten and left trapped in a vicious cycle of despair. APNU must continue to work to bring hope to these people by lifting the burden of depression from their backs. Best wishes to you, Dr. Cummings.
