They call themselves ‘The Vreed-en-Hoop Progressive Stalls Committee’; their mission is to ensure that the Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara Stelling area does not develop a garbage-infested image.
This is according to the Committee’s spokesperson, Rose Sugrim, who said that since no effort is usually made to keep the area tidy a group of stallholders decided to be proactive.
“We are the stall owners here, and there has been no one helping this community (so) we decided that we will clean this place,” said Sugrim.
The committee members were in fact engaged in a clean-up exercise Sunday. The activity was the second they would have undertaken, having completed one the previous week.
It is the hope of the Committee that others would be inspired by the clean-up move and even opt to emulate it, or render assistance. The committee is appealing for donations of garbage bins that could be placed strategically along the Stelling area to prevent wanton littering.
“We formed this group and we are strong. We want betterment for this stelling… We don’t want this place to look like (sections of) Georgetown with garbage (but) we need some help; we need bins,” noted Sugrim.
And even as efforts are being made to address the littering culture, there currently exists a stall at the Stelling, reportedly owned by a Government official that has been abandoned for a while and is being used by some as a dumpsite.
“This stand is the main source of garbage collection; we need it to be removed… It will help the buses to park better and the vendors there can see what is happening,” one vendor said.
There are reports that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council Chairman is unable to address the growing situation. Officials of the Local Government Ministry have since promised to visit the area in the new week.
