Almost 12 years after he was killed in a shootout with the police at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, the authorities have now seen it fit to conduct an inquest into the death of notorious Buxton gunman, Compton Cambridge.
The matter is being heard by Magistrate Zamena Ali at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court and already it has gotten off to two false starts.
Kaieteur News understands that last Friday on the second calling of the matter the Magistrate was forced to adjourn the hearing, due to the absence of the required number of jurors.
On that occasion five witnesses, four of them civilians, had turned up.
Ironically, all the police ranks who were involved in the shooting are no longer members of the Force.
One of the ranks is out of the jurisdiction, while the other two are somewhere in the country.
It is not clear if they have been summoned.
Cambridge was shot dead on June 6, 2002. At the time he was at a house in Nabaclis with three other gunmen who managed to escape when they were challenged by a party of policemen.
Following the shootout, police recovered two bulletproof vests, 14.9 mm Luger spent shells, four live 12 gauge cartridges, four 7.62 X 39 mm spent shells, four 7.62 warheads, two 9 mm warheads and a black pouch containing 20 7.62 X 51 mm rounds.
He became notorious after he was fingered in the murder of Detective Sergeant Harry Kooseran a few weeks earlier.
He was eventually wanted in connection with six more murders including three other policemen.
Among the murders for which Cambridge was wanted were those of Ramdeo and Sita Persaud of Annandale, Constable, Sherwin Alleyne at Coldingen and three counts of attempted murder of three other ranks who were shot that night.
He was also linked to the murder of Ramnauth Persaud of Commerce House Cambio on Regent Street and the attempted murder of Kennard Gobin and the murder of police Constable Andy Atwell at the Alberttown Police Station.
The notorious Cambridge who was a central figure in the initial Buxton gang was also fingered in an attempt to murder police ranks, who were on a mobile patrol along Buxton Public Road. He was also wanted for a series of robberies in Georgetown.
