A nurse attached to the Linden Hospital Annex has been charged with assaulting the social worker, who was probing a case of her unlawfully injecting her children with insulin. She remains in custody without bail after her first court appearance.
Gail De Jonge, a 24-year-old mother of two, pleaded not guilty to the common assault charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the city court yesterday.
State Prosecutor, Corporal Vernette Pindar, urged the Chief Magistrate to have her held without bail, saying that she posed a danger to the victim and her children who already suffered at her hands.
The charge arose out of an incident on February 7 when the nurse allegedly assaulted social worker, Huette Moore, at the Linden Hospital Complex, Mackenzie, Linden.
The Prosecution did not reveal the particulars of the assault but stated that the nature and circumstance through which the charge arose were enough for the court to order the nurse held.
On February 7, the nurse was said to have injected her seven and eleven-year-old children with insulin.
Following reports of child abuse, Moore, the social worker who was investigating the matter, reportedly approached De Jonge and was subsequently assaulted.
The State Prosecutor told the court that the two children are still hospitalised and further opined that if granted bail she would further attempt to harm the children as well as the social worker.
After a four minute court hearing, the case was transferred to the Christianburgh Magistrates Court and is expected to be called for a pretrial hearing before Magistrate Clive Nurse tomorrow (February 12).
