Dear Sports Editor,
It is quite extraordinary that Robin Singh has arrogated to himself the right to respond to a letter by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) to the Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony.
That letter referred Dr. Anthony to the anomalous situation in which Neil Kumar, Director of Sport, has been officially representing the Government of Guyana (GoG) at events of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) in spite of the GoG’s stated position of the illegality of the GCB.
I wish to remind Robin Singh that the GoG got involved in the ongoing cricket fiasco only because a constituent member of the of the GCB, the Berbice Cricket Board, as well as the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) and the East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) requested the involvement of the Government to bring order and accountability to the chaos that has engulfed or national game with charges of illegal elections, impropriety and blatant disregard of court orders.
I also wish to remind Robin Singh that thirteen of the fourteen members of the very Guyana Super-50 team which he noted has advanced to the Regional Semi-Final Tournament came from these areas – Berbice, Georgetown and East Coast which the GCB has vindictively ostracized. These areas have not been given any financial assistance from the GCB which continues to receive large sums of monies from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for cricket development throughout Guyana.
Robin Singh is being overly mischievous when he refers to Mental Hospital as a phantom club. Mental Hospital is a founding member of the BCB which is now seventy-five (75) years in existence. Mental Hospital continues to participate in competitions of the BCB including the 2013 competitions.
If Robin Singh is interested in phantom clubs, he should check on the elections held for the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) and the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) where the majority of the legitimate clubs in those two (2) areas were deliberately not invited to their respective Annual General Meeting (AGM) so that a very small band of individuals could take over those Associations.
Robin Singh must also know that illegal elections of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) were held in clear violation of court orders and without the GCA and the ECCB. Interestingly, only two persons (Anand Sanasie and Rajendra Singh) of the purported Executive of the DCB are known to the public. The rest are phantom members. The Illustrious Berbice Cricket Board is Correct to Challenge the Legality of the Elections of the Guyana Cricket Board.
Robin Singh proceeds to make an outlandish statement “No decent citizen can support the Cricket Bill in its present form”. The Cricket Bill was crafted by a Special Select Committee of Parliamentarians representing the three political parties.
Over a four-month period, this Committee worked diligently and received and analyzed contributions from a wide cross-section of persons and organizations including the purported Guyana Cricket Board and the purported Demerara Cricket Board.
All Guyana, except Robin Singh and a handful of persons, have expressed full support for the Bill as the only proper and sanitized method to stop the malaise that has consumed our national game. The Bill will pave the way for fair and legitimate elections, accountability and transparency at all levels in the cricket structure of Guyana.
Robin Singh can then campaign for whoever he wants to hold the reins of Guyana cricket but the new system will ensure good order and fair play and that is the clear objective of the Government and the Opposition in Parliament.
Yours truly,
Priya Baichan-Persaud
