The days are ticking down to hours; the hours to minutes and the minutes to seconds as Guyanese boxers get ready to reassert their dominance on the Caribbean platform when they square off with their counterparts from St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) presents two nights of fistic fury in the 4-nation boxing championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) February 14-16 next.
The overseas teams are scheduled to arrive in Guyana Thursday morning and the action gets underway one day later. The local team consists of the best pugilists, under the tutelage of Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake, Wensel Thomas and Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon and from all appearances those coaches have really worked relentlessly to ensure that their charges attain the best form ever.
This was apparent when the boxers were taken through their paces at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym Sunday morning last. The coaches surrounded the ring while the boxers engaged in sparring sessions with members of the former group noting their weak and strong areas, while correcting and/or offering praises and advice as was necessary.
The boxers all appear to be in top shape and are oozing confidence of overwhelming their Caribbean counterparts. There were mini slugfests as Imran Khan, Clairmonte Gibson, Bert Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft and Ron Smith among others, engaged in delightful exchanges that brought smiles to the coaches’ face.
Michael April fights out of Berbice and for someone who has only recently entered the fistic arena, his level of fitness and his obvious skillful displays are indeed impressive.
The two selectees out of the Republican Boxing gym, Stephon Nedd and Anandan Dhanraj, were impressive during last Friday’s workout and both pugilists look ready to uphold the rich tradition established through the exploits of their predecessors, the late Winston ‘Service’ Richards, Allan ‘Redbelly’ Housner and Patrick Best among others.
The organizers have gone to extra mile and will take the bouts into supporters’ home through live broadcast complements of the National Communication Network (NCN) but this should not negate broad based support and patrons are encouraged to trek to the venue to offer live support to local pugilists.
The other members of the local team are Junior Henry (52kgs) and Delon Charles (56kgs), while the two females are Dwon Thompson and Theresa London, both tipping the scales at 75kgs.
The St Lucian boxers are light/welterweight Lyndell ‘The Russian’ Marcellin, welterweight Ron Bastien and middleweight Arthur Langillier, while Trinidad’s representatives are female, Chimbre Taylor (75kgs), Akmal Strode (52kgs), Christian McDonald (56kgs), Michael Alexander (60kgs), Jean Paul Cooper (64kgs), Akiel Outram (69kgs) and Aaron Prince (75kgs). The Jamaicans are Patrick Sahadeo (60kgs), Anthony Clarke (64kgs), Kestna Davis (69kgs) and Michael Gardner (75kgs).
The boxers are winding down training sessions and are encamped at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
