Linden based 17-year-old Michael Anthony, a team Coco member, showed his class yet again when he thumped a star studded field to win the 23rd annual R&R International 40 mile cycle road race on the West Demerara, yesterday.
It was another excellent day for cycling with the morning sun streaming down, mildly backed by steady winds, providing the perfect platform for an explosive performance by the young Anthony.
In a four-way sprint to the line for the top accolade, Anthony won from Paul De Nobrega, Geron Williams and Hamza Eastman in that order; clocking exactly 1Hour 41 Minutes. Winner of the veteran category for the second successive race Robin Persaud took the fifth place with Raynauth Jeffrey closing out the top six.
Raul Leal, who had won the junior category over the same distance one week earlier, had to settle for the second place this time with Shaquel Agard coming in third.
Stephen Fernandes took the second place in the veteran category, while Ozia Macullay turned the tables this time around on Richard Charles who had defeated him in the Mountain Bike class the week before. Toshwanna Doris was the lone female competitor.
Raymond Newton copped two of the six prime prizes, with one each to De Nobrega, Marlon Williams, Delroy Hinds and Raynauth Jeffrey.
Forty-two riders faced starter’s orders at Scoonorde, West Bank Demerara, just off the Demerara Harbour Bridge and very early there was a twelve man break and Anthony was a part of that.
The front runners shared the work load for the upward journey with the breeze behind their backs. Coming back and facing the breeze the workload naturally increased and this resulted in the pack breaking up.
In the leading pack were Anthony, Hamza Eastman, Geron Williams and Robin Persaud, whilst chasing about 100 meters behind as they approached La Union were Raul Leal, Andre Abdool, Orville Hinds and Paul De Nobrega.
The two packs connected but soon after Anthony went on a break and was followed by De Nobrega, Eastman and Williams with the Linden based junior prevailing in the sprint.
Commenting on his performance, Anthony said that the race was good but a bit tough, eventually working out in his favour.
“I think it was a good race for me overall. This year I am looking to dominate my division, I know it will be competitive but will be training hard to be the best.”
Anthony who was third in the junior category at last year’s Caribbean Championships plans to go all the way this time around and said that he has plans to compete as much as possible outside of Guyana and to also dominate.
