With the development of the game being the pivotal aim, the third edition of the Hand in Hand Second Division 40-Overs competition, that will attract seven teams from the West Berbice area, was launched on Friday last in the Board room of the sponsors, Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.

This year’s competition which forms part of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Golden Jubilee celebrations (75th year of existence) will see the top Region 5 team being rewarded with $60,000 and a trophy; the runner-up wins $40,000 with the player-of-final is set to walk away with $10,000 and a trophy.
Speaking at the launch, BCB Special Events and Golden Jubilee Committee Chairman, Hilbert Foster stated that this year will be one that would always be remembered by everyone involved.
“While the rest of the country is reeling from the negative effect of the ongoing local cricket crisis, it would be cricket, lovely cricket and more cricket in the Ancient County,” Foster emphatically stated.
Hand in Hand Group of Companies Human Resources and Administrative Manger Mrs. Zaida, Joaquin in her presentation prior to handing over the cheque, pointed out that her company recognises the importance of sports and culture in building a positive society.
Mrs. Joaquin also noted that her company is cognizant of the importance of investing at this level. She said that it is the wish of the company that the tournament would grow to benefit both entities.
The teams that have been named to participate are: Blairmont, Bush Lot, Bath, Rainbow Generation, D’Edward, Rosignol and Hopetown.
The BCB articulated its gratitude to Mrs. Joaquin and Hand in Hand for reposing confidence in them for another year. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Joshi and Ms. Andrea for their unflinching support and cooperation.
Players in the targeted area of West Berbice were challenged to take full advantage of the opportunity that is offered by way of this tournament through the BCB which Foster said is committed to the growth game in Region 5 at every level. (Franklin Wilson)
