The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) yesterday announced that it has revised the prize structure for the upcoming, ‘Road to Mecca’ National Club Playoffs, which will commence from March 1 at the Mecca of basketball, The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
It was disclosed at the launch of the tournament on Friday at Duke Lodge that the top club in the competition will pocket $800,000 while the second place club will take home $200,000; but a release yesterday from the Federation informed of a new prize structure.
“The GABF has increased the monetary prizes from $1 Million to $1.2 Million for the National Basketball Playoffs to be held on March 1, 2, 9, 16 and 23,” the release noted. The Federation in its release said the new structure is aimed at rewarding all 16 clubs.
The National Playoffs will feature the top five seeded clubs in Georgetown, Linden and Berbice, with a wildcard playoff for the 16th spot.
“Prizes to be awarded are based on the format used for (awarding) prize money at Wimbledon Tennis Championships and US Open Tennis Championships, where each participant receives a monetary award based on their performance during the Championships,” the GABF said.
The federation said that the “funds will likely be used by the clubs to strengthen their structure and administration, which is a key goal of the GABF,” and apologised for the information that was release before. The new prize structure for the competition is below:
Results | Club/s | Cash Prize per Club | Total Cash Prizes |
