A self-proclaimed ‘mentally ill’ man was yesterday sentenced to nine months imprisonment after he admitted to burgling a Creen Street house earlier this week.
At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Monty Adams, pleaded guilty to the break and enter and larceny charge which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
On February 5, Adams burgled Debbie Griffith’s Cream Street, Georgetown house and stole a $15,000 kitchen sink, a $17,000 plastic barrel and a $25,000 toilet bowl.
When asked to enter a plea, the man responded “I guilty because I tek the sink. I been staying at the house all the time; I didn’t break and enter the house. I pleading guilty because they find me with the drum and sink and they take me to the East Coast and keep me for three days.”
“I deh pun medication. I sick and deh heh. I very mental. me worship; I need medication,” Adams proclaimed.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant told the court that Griffith had secured her home and went to bed that night but she was later awoken by a loud noise.
He said she then checked her house and noticed those three items missing so she decided to report the matter to the police. Acting on a ‘tip’ the police arrested Adams.
While in custody he reportedly assisted the police with the investigations and the barrel and sink were recovered.
However, after the prosecution concluded its case, Adams said “I got the stuff from downstairs. I did not take them from her house. I pull them down the road from Brickdam.”
At that point, the Chief Magistrate stood the matter down for a few minutes during which Adams fell asleep in the prisoners’ dock.
When his matter was called again, the court learnt that he had no prior convictions or charges and he was subsequently jailed by the Chief Magistrate.
